China's industrial boiler manufacturing industry has undergone decades of development, especially with the reform and opening-up policy accelerating the industry onto the expressway of development. Due to the increasing market demand, the number of manufacturing enterprises has increased rapidly, and the scale of the industry has expanded continuously.
According to statistics, by the end of last year, there were 1,555 enterprises nationwide holding various levels of boiler manufacturing licenses, including 1,205 approved by the State Administration for Market Regulation and 350 approved by local provincial and bureau authorities, capable of providing boilers of different pressure ratings and capacities to meet the current market demand in China.
Taking a broad view of the development of the industrial boiler industry, although remarkable achievements have been made, there are still hidden concerns.
Firstly, the overall technical level of the industry needs to be improved.
Currently, there are still issues such as too many manufacturers, scattered production, low production capacity for most enterprises, uneven development among enterprises, and low production concentration within the industry. According to investigations, although most enterprises have effectively enhanced their vitality and significantly improved their market responsiveness by transforming their operating mechanisms, some enterprises still lack long-term development strategies, resulting in weak independent development and innovation capabilities, inadequate investments, and consequently, the level and quality of product development have not improved significantly.
The obvious problem is that market competition is at a low level, and the overall technical level and economic benefits of the industry have not improved rapidly.
Secondly, there is severe energy waste. China's energy structure is dominated by coal, and a large number of industrial boilers consume a significant amount of coal tar, which is also a major source of coal smoke pollution in China. According to the investigation and analysis of the Industrial Boiler Branch of the China Electrical Appliance Industry Association: there are currently about 470,000 coal-fired industrial boilers in use in China, consuming about 400 million tons of standard coal annually, accounting for about one-quarter of China's total coal consumption. However, the average operating efficiency of coal-fired industrial boilers is only about 65%, which is 15-20 percentage points lower than the international advanced level.
Huge Potential for Energy Conservation in the Industry
Looking ahead to future development, energy conservation and emission reduction are not only urgent tasks for the industrial boiler industry but also long-term strategic priorities.
The importance and significance of industrial boilers in national economic and social development are universally recognized. However, at the same time, the large amount of energy consumed by the entire industry and the high proportion of smoke dust, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and oxide emissions in the country's total emissions not only indicate that the current energy conservation and environmental protection indicators of the industrial boiler industry are far from the goals of building a resource-saving and environment-friendly society but also fully demonstrate the huge potential for energy conservation in the industry.
Energy conservation and emission reduction are global challenges and topics of common concern worldwide. In recent years, during China's rapid economic development, issues such as low energy utilization rates, unreasonable consumption structures, and intensifying supply and demand contradictions have become increasingly prominent, and the contradiction between ecological environment deterioration and economic development has intensified, significantly restricting the sustained, rapid, and healthy development of the economy.
According to predictions by experts from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, by the middle of this century, China's annual energy consumption will still reach 3.0 to 3.8 billion tons of standard coal under strict control. By then, the maximum domestic energy supply will be approximately 3.2 billion tons of standard coal, indicating a large energy supply gap, especially for petroleum resources. Moreover, the large number of industrial boilers not only consume a significant amount of coal but have also become major sources of coal smoke pollution. Therefore, the industrial boiler industry has become one of the main targets for China to carry out energy conservation, emission reduction, efficiency improvement, and pollution reduction.
It is worth mentioning that the national "Medium- and Long-Term Special Plan for Energy Conservation" has listed coal-fired industrial boilers as the top priority among the ten key energy-saving projects during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period.
In recent years, China has launched extensive energy-saving and emission-reduction efforts. The new "Energy Conservation Law" has made resource conservation a fundamental national policy, and energy-saving and emission-reduction work has become a significant national affair and major event for the whole society. In response to the increasingly rapid growth of energy consumption and the increasingly severe environmental protection pressure, the State Council has revised the energy policy by assessing the situation, emphasizing the "simultaneous development and conservation of energy, with energy conservation taking precedence," calling on citizens to implement "energy conservation and emission reduction" in energy consumption and utilization, and formulating binding indicators for "energy conservation and emission reduction." Under this new situation, vigorously promoting energy conservation and emission reduction efforts in the industrial boiler industry undoubtedly has a positive role and significant meaning.
